It combines two linear movements in a seamless transition to pop the door out of the door aperture and then slide it along the vehicle side. This keeps the door protrusion from the vehicle side to the absolute minimum, minimizing the risk of the door striking the street furniture or persons during the opening should passengers fall against them when they are closed.
